At what point does a woman extend her forgiveness?
While the idea of forgiveness may seem very far away for newly wounded women, at some point each of us needs to consider forgiving her partner for the pain and loss caused by his actions. Without forgiveness, the hurt in our hearts plants the destructive seed of resentment and bitterness. As resentment and bitterness sprout in our hearts, they not only wrap their roots around our marital relationship, they twist our very nature and interfere with all relationships. Over time, their grip reshapes us. In a real sense, forgiveness is something we do for ourselves, even though it touches everyone we meet.
Forgiveness is not denying, ignoring, or forgetting the past, nor does it equal trust, or necessarily mean reconciliation. Rather, it is a gift you give yourself so you can be free of the resentment and bitterness. It comes with a bonus: when we forgive, we create the opportunity for a happier future—whether we spend it with our present husband, alone, or with someone new.
Each of us must answer the “when” question for ourselves. Certainly, forgiveness should not be rushed or forced, even though many partners report their clergy pressed them to forgive right at the start. But artificial forgiveness isn’t forgiveness at all. Moreover, it can impede the working-through process indicative of true forgiveness. When you’re ready, you’ll know it by sensing an inner letting go of the emotional debt your husband “owes” you. In its place will come the trademark peace that forgiveness imparts.
